A Midsummer Night’s Dream

By William Shakespeare

Assistant Director (Voice, Set design)

In this final year Bachelor Actor University of East London production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” I worked as the Assistant Director as well as leading vocal support, set decorating and supported student emotional well-being through proactive pastoral care. Together with director Majid Mehdizadeh-Valoujerdy we leaned into a contemporary setting of East London, setting the scene in the neighbourhood the students have spent their 3 years on their acting program. With a dedicated and faithful connection to the text, we extracted the comic out of each of the cast members and created a show where audiences were doubled down laughing each performance.

I focused on vocal health to train the cast members voices to maintain a loud and clear verse, with warm ups developed from RADA, Rose Bruford, LAMDA and Linklater techniques I studied. I helped actors learn lines, discover text and maintain standards for steady vocal health.

As we developed the context and design for the show, I decorated and constructed the set design and transitions. choreography to transform the stage from a politician’s cabinet to a magical rave forest within the fairies, the lovers and mechanicals fond themselves in inspired by a variety of 90s and 00s rave cultures in London. Being a recent drama school graduate being able to support the students with strict confidentiality and mental health practices was an empowering and meaningful of this productions process. Learning how to foster an uplifting, energetic and hard working environment for the students meant they could work at their fullest potential each rehearsal, tech day and performance.
