People, Places and Things
Duncan MacMillan
In People, Places and Things, I explored the story of an actress entering rehab as she confronts addiction, performance, and the instability of identity. I was drawn to the play’s psychological intensity and its interrogation of the systems—social, cultural, and theatrical—that shape cycles of dependency.
The rehearsal process was grounded in research into addiction and recovery, alongside an actor-centred approach to voice, movement, and imagination. Working with a neurodivergent ensemble, I adapted rehearsal structures to be more flexible, transparent, and responsive, allowing space for different rhythms of learning, processing, and performance. This included clear communication, consent-based practices, and collaborative problem-solving, creating an environment where difficult material could be explored with both emotional depth and care.
