The Masses are Asses
Pedro Pietri
I directed The Masses Are Asses as an exploration of absurdism and political satire. The play’s sharp class critique and roots in Puerto Rican identity drew me in, and I was interested in how its stylised, comic language could be used to express urgent political ideas.
Rehearsals focused on physical play, tempo, improvisation, and clowning techniques to uncover humour through movement, rhythm, and relationships rather than just text. The process expanded my understanding of genre and introduced me to a more heightened theatrical language, challenging me to balance absurdity with clear political intent.
